India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has now become the fastest and most popular real-time payment system across the world. As per June 2025 data, UPI has overtaken global payment system Visa to take the number 1 position in the world.
According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a total of ₹24.04 lakh crore worth of transactions were done through UPI in June, with a total of 18.4 billion transactions recorded. These figures are much higher than Visa, which does around 63.9 crore transactions per day, while UPI has surpassed the record of more than 65 crore transactions per day.

This achievement of UPI reflects the growing strength of India’s digital economy. Launched in 2016, UPI has today become the choice of small shopkeepers to large businesses in every corner of the country. Its strength lies in easy use, transactions without card or cash, and multilingual support.
The policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, RBI and NPCI have together led the country towards going cashless. Leaving behind established companies like Visa is a victory of Indian technological innovation. This success has established India as a leader in the global digital payments sector.
