The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the release of new ₹ 50 bank notes, which will come with the signature of new governor Sanjay Malhotra. Malhotra took over as the 26th governor of RBI in December 2024, replacing Shaktikanta Das.
What will be special in the new note?
The design of the new ₹ 50 note will remain the same as the existing notes of the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series. It will have Mahatma Gandhi’s picture, security features and cultural symbols as before. The only change is the governor’s signature.
What will happen to the old ₹ 50 note?
RBI has clarified that the old ₹ 50 notes will remain fully valid and in circulation. There is no need for people to change them. This step has been taken only to update the currency system, so that notes with the signature of the new governor can come in the market.
Why are new notes issued?
Whenever a new governor is appointed in RBI, notes with his signature are issued. This is a regular process, through which the identity of leadership is maintained in the currency system. Earlier also notes with signatures of governors like Urjit Patel, Shaktikanta Das have been issued.
